In a world where technology is becoming more and more advanced, new methods are continually being found to make our lives easier. One method currently being arranged will make the lives of those with truck driving jobs easier by creating transponders to submit information to toll booths and weight stations electronically. What this means, is that truck drivers will be able to pay a toll of submit the information required at weight stations without having to stop. The use of transponders is growing quickly, each state sees the use of such technologies and Texas, Maryland, and California are some of the states that have already implemented transponders with some of their tollbooths and weight stations.
One of the greatest advantages of using transponders is elimination of the common bottleneck of traffic around tollbooths. By using a transponder to submit information traffic will be able to breeze through toll stops at regular highway speeds. By removing the traffic jams around toll stations truckers will be able to increase their mileage per hour and reduce the number of accidents seen on the freeways.
As for the benefits of using transponders at weight stations, those with transponders will be able to increase their productivity by freeing up inspectors to deal with more important issues and keeping trucks on the move. For those trucks that meet the requirements necessary at weight stations they are provided a green light electronically and are able to continue on their way without having to stop.
Enabling commercial vehicles to reach their destination without having to stop for tollbooths and weight stations not only decreases traffic jams, but will also decrease the amount of exhaust pollution released by idling automobiles. The State of Michigan estimates the reduction in emissions could be measured at 5,000 metric tons.
As good as all this may sound, there are some glitches in the system. One of the most challenging being that many of the transponders are not compatible with each other. This causes problems when a driver with a Texas formatted transponder tries to submit his information to a transponder in New Jersey. The issue is currently being reviewed and as a possible solution, the Alliance for Toll Interoperability is working to develop a system that is based on the vehicle’s license plate rather than upon a transponder.
