There are probably many in this world who look at trucking companies such as CR England and think about how they are running the environment. You may think that as a large trucking industry there is not much they can do in the form of fuel efficiency and other practices to improve the impact commercial truck have on the environment.
However, you would be surprised to find out that CR England had partnered with an environmental brand called SmartWay and is currently working on ways to become more fuel-efficient. SmartWay was launched by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a brand dedicated to providing more fuel-efficient and overall environmentally cleaner options of transportation. SmartWay builds partnerships with the government, businesses and consumers to protect the environment.
CR England has been involved as a partner with SmartWay since 2005 and fully supports the goals of the brand. Mitch England, director of fuel, said, “We knew that our goals as a company lined up with those of the Partnership when we first heard about SmartWay. It’s been a valuable resource for us. Since joining, we’ve strengthened our commitment to strategies that have improved our environmental performance, as well as our bottom line.”
CR England is continually on the lookout for new ways to improve their ecological footprint, even when it means making some changes that require a complete overhaul of their maintenance. In 2010 when some ecological changes were made to the company engines Todd England, executive vice president in charge of maintenance, said, “While some of these developments have reduced emissions or have helped increase our fuel economy, they oftentimes have a dramatic effect on our maintenance practices.”
The company is also currently installing side skirts on new trailers to improve the economy. While the skirts will help the economy, they will also cause an added challenge to CR England, as they require a high amount of maintenance. The company has also conducted various tests to make sure their refrigeration tactics are as fuel-efficient as possible.
